Join jazz master and saxophonist Paul Klemperer for an informal exploration of a wide-ranging jazz repertoire. Backed by a solid rhythm section (Gordon Peery, piano: Dave Morse, bass; Brian Quinn, drums) Klemperer will welcome various local singers and instrumentalists to share the stage for some spontaneous arrangements that will delight the audience and maybe even surprise the band.
Paul Klemperer works as a bandleader, teacher, composer, and writer. Born in Boston, Paul discovered jazz at an early age, sneaking into smoky clubs by age 13. He studied with jazz legends Archie Shepp, Max Roach, and Ray Copeland before moving to Austin in 1982. There he has worked with many great artists in the blues, roots, and jazz traditions, such as Marcia Ball, Angela Strehli, Doyle Bramhall, Malford Milligan, Seth Walker, Nick Curran, and members of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Paul resides in Austin, TX but spends most of the summer at his ancestral summer home in Nelson NH.
Pianist Gordon Peery is well known throughout the Monadnock region for his work as a contra dance musician, but in recent years he has expanded into a variety of other genres including jazz. He has been part of a Paul Klemperer summer band for the last ten years and has also backed up vocalists performing the American Songbook.
Dave Morse has played upright and electric bass and the bari sax chair in various big bands since high school. After moving to Keene in 1996, Dave studied bass line construction and harmony with Scott Mullett. He was one of the founding members of the Keene Jazz Orchestra and continues today as the KJO treasurer and front end manager while subbing on bass and bari sax. Over the past 20 years, small group jazz has been a significant portion of Dave's bass playing.
Originally based in New York City for 20 years, Brian Quinn has performed at venues spanning from Birdland Jazz Club to CBGBs. He was trained in jazz at The New School where he studied with Billy Hart, Michael Carvin, Joe Chambers, and Shawn Pelton. Brian now resides in New Hampshire. He was also a music manager for over a decade, producing concerts around the globe for Kurt Elling, Jane Monheit, New York Voices, Richard Bona, and Taylor Eigsti.
